Vishram Ghat Mathura
A treasure full of history and mythology has continued to shape one of the oldest cities in the world - Mathura. It is among the most beautiful cities in India. It is a city with great sacred importance to Hinduism. It is popularly known as the heart of Brij Bhoomi, the land and birthplace of Lord Krishna.
Myriads of heritage sites in Mathura include the Gita Mandir, Banke Bihari temple, Iskcon temple, Govind dev temple, and the Naam Yog sadhana mandir, among others. The Kesava Deo Temple too was built on the site of Lord Krishna's birthplace.
To add to the amazement, several ghats of the Yamuna river embrace this beautiful city. The most famous of these is the Vishram Ghat, where the traditional ritual of parikrama takes off and ends at the city locale.
About the Vishram Ghat
Vishram Ghat is the result of a history-induced nomenclature. 'Vishram' literally translates to 'rest', and as per the legend of Lord Krishna, Vishram Ghat served as his resting place after defeating Kansa, the wicked demon ruler. Hence, a journey to Mathura indeed calls for a visit to the Vishram Ghat. It is present in the centre of the ghat system, with 12 ghats each in the north and south directions.
Pilgrims from all over the country come to Vishram Ghat to bathe in its holy waters and complete the customary parikrama.
Historical Significance of Vishram Ghat
According to the great epics of India, Lord Krishna sat under the shade of Giriraj Ji after his battle with Kansa. There are a plethora of stories related to Vishram Sthali, one of them is depicted as a story between Shri Yamuna Maharani (the river goddess) and Dharamaraj.
During the rule of the Mughal emperor in the 15th Century, this place suffered from extreme injustice and discrimination. This was because of the various decrees issued by Sikandar Lodi. However, when Hindus were under great distress due to the opposition of Sikandar Lodi, Acharya Keshav Bhatt Kashmiri of Nimbark sect and Vallabhacharya Ji Maharaj had the restrictions at Vishram Ghat removed by the power of their commitment and devotion for the divine.
Architecture of Vishram Ghat
The Vishram Ghat's architecture shows marble stonework, including a massive stone arch. One side of the Vishram Ghat consists of 12 Ghats, while the other side has 11 more!
The Vishram ghat is lined with many temples and some of the most significant shrines, such as Yamuna-Krishan, Murli Manohar, etc.
Location and Importance of the Vishram Ghat
Vishram Ghat is located about a 4 km distance from Mathura junction. It is a sacred bathing spot situated at the bank of the river Yamuna which is deemed one of the holiest in the Hindu religion.
As per the pristine Hindu religion, devotees can free themselves from all the sins and misfortunes once they bathe in these holy rivers, such as Yamuna, Ganga, etc. Moreover, it's believed that one can also wash off their impure Karmas and aspire towards salvation.
The Yamuna river also signifies another religious belief concerning brothers and sisters. On Bhai Dooj, a festive event, taking a dip in this holy river is considered pretty auspicious for siblings. This tradition also includes the ritual of the Grand Arti. Vishram Ghat displays natural beauty during the evening prayers. People float oil lamps, and diyas on paan leaves into the Yamuna river. Many other rituals and prayers are performed on this Ghat, along with the holy dip.

According to tradition, after defeating King Kansa, Lord Krishna came to this place and took “Vishram” (rest).
That is why it is called Vishram Ghat.
It is considered the central point of Mathura’s spiritual geography.
