History:-

⚔️ Medieval Destruction and Rebuilding

The site faced several waves of iconoclasm followed by restoration:

  1. Mahmud of Ghazni (1017 CE): He plundered and burned the city, including the grand Krishna temple.

  2. Gahadavala Revival (1150 CE): An inscription mentions a person named Jajja building a "brilliantly white" temple during the reign of Raja Vijayapal Dev.

  3. Sikandar Lodi (16th Century): The Delhi Sultanate ruler destroyed the temple again as part of his religious policies.

  4. Raja Veer Singh Deo (1618 CE): Under the reign of Mughal Emperor Jahangir, the Orchha king built a massive red sandstone temple at a cost of 33 lakh rupees. This temple was so tall that travelers noted its gilded spire could be seen from Agra.

🏛️ The Mughal-Modern Conflict
  • Aurangzeb (1670 CE): The Mughal Emperor ordered the total destruction of the Keshavdev temple. The Shahi Idgah Mosque was built on its raised plinth using the temple's materials.

  • British Era: In 1815, the East India Company auctioned the 13.37-acre land of Katra Keshavdev, which was purchased by Raja Patnimal of Banaras.

  • Post-Independence: Following a legal battle, the land was acquired by the Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi Trust (founded by Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya and funded by the Birla and Dalmia families).

  • The 1968 Agreement: A compromise was signed between the temple trust and the Mosque committee, which allowed the mosque to remain while the temple was built adjacent to it.

📜 History of Sri Krishna Janmabhoomi

Sri Krishna Janmabhoomi, located in Mathura, is believed to be the sacred birthplace of Lord Shri Krishna and has a long and complex history spanning thousands of years.

🕉️ Ancient Period

According to Hindu tradition, Shri Krishna was born in a prison cell where his parents were imprisoned by the tyrant king Kansa. After Krishna’s birth, the site became a sacred place of worship for devotees.

🛕 Early Temple Construction

Historical records indicate that a temple was built here around the early centuries CE by Krishna devotees. Over time, Mathura became an important center of Krishna worship.

⚔️ Medieval Period Destruction & Reconstruction

The temple was attacked and destroyed several times during medieval invasions but was rebuilt repeatedly by devotees and local rulers.

A grand temple known as Keshavdev Temple was constructed in the 17th century but later destroyed during the reign of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. Afterward, the Shahi Idgah Mosque was built on part of the site.

🏗️ Modern Reconstruction

In the 20th century, efforts by Hindu organizations and devotees led to the rebuilding of the temple complex. The present Sri Krishna Janmabhoomi complex was developed after India’s independence and remains a major pilgrimage center today.
