Govardhan Hill

🏔️ Govardhan Hill

📍 Location

Govardhan Hill is located in Govardhan town, about 22 km from Mathura and around 25 km from Vrindavan in Uttar Pradesh, India.

It is one of the most sacred places in the Braj region.

📖 Mythological History – Govardhan Leela

Govardhan Hill is famous for the divine pastime of Lord Krishna known as Govardhan Leela.

According to the Bhagavata Purana:

  • The people of Braj used to worship Indra, the rain god.

  • Young Krishna advised them to worship Govardhan Hill instead, as it provided grass, water, and shelter.

  • Angry Indra sent heavy rains to destroy Braj.

  • Krishna lifted Govardhan Hill on His little finger for seven days and seven nights, protecting everyone.

  • Finally, Indra realized his mistake and surrendered to Krishna.

This event shows Krishna as:

  • Supreme Protector

  • Destroyer of pride

  • Lover of devotees

🌿 Spiritual Importance

  • Govardhan Hill is considered non-different from Lord Krishna Himself.

  • Devotees worship it as Giriraj Maharaj.

  • Even small stones from Govardhan are worshipped as sacred (Govardhan Shila).

In Vaishnava tradition, Govardhan is one of the holiest places in India.
